The first cocoa trees in Africa were planted in the 19th century on the Island of São Tomé, off the coastline of Central Africa. São Tomé became known as 'Chocolate Island' for it was the world's leading cocoa producer, one hundred years ago. Michel Cluizel discovered 'Ilha Toma' cocoa beans to have a very distinctive taste, worthy of composing a new single origin : 'pure São Tomé' chocolate.
It is generous and broad in character, reminiscent of its fertile, volcanic and maritime land blended with subtle grassy and liquorices notes creating a long lingering finish.
Perhaps too sweet for some, but a good chocolate for those less keen on the bitter side of things.
